Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fully ruptured patella tendon

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All - A few weeks ago I fully ruptured my patella tendon below the patella on my right knee. I had a successful operation about a week after the injury to reattach and I'm now recovering. Has anyone else had this injury? Is there any advice anyone can give please.

Sorry to hear of your injury, that’s a major injury that needs to be rectified within days as the tendon shrivels up and becomes in repairable.
A good friend of mine and ski instructor did this in March and was back the following season. I suspect he took it easy for the first month or 2 of the following season but by the following one he was ripping as hard as ever without any issue.
Good luck

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for the advice - I had the op done pretty quickly so that sounds positive - I'm glad your friend made a good recovery which also bodes well for me

A patella tendon rupture is a significant injury but if treated well you should get back to skiing. Ideally you are moving your knee already as this helps reduce scarring. It will probably take about six months back to sports though and require a lot of rehab. Don’t shirk the physio and be patient.

Thanks - it's comfortably unto 30 degree bending. I think I could do more but the doctors want me to limit it for now (I'm thinking of calling the hospital to see if I can increase the bend in my brace). Progress seems good compared to the original timescales I was given but now and again I seem to tweak it while sleeping which makes it quite painful for a few hours (I suspect I try to lift/straighten it in my sleep). When that happens I just rest up and keep it straight until it feels ok

@Henwc, take a look at Anna Veith's facebook page for today's picture

I'm now off crutches - I can walk pretty normally. I can cover a few miles relatively comfortably and manage slightly lopsided breaststroke in the pool. I'm trying to exercise the right leg to fatigue and then rest it.

I'm waiting for a physio referral from the hospital so I'm not doing any specific exercises which is getting a bit frustrating.

@Henwc, can you afford a private physio - even one or two session to get you started? should only be about £40 each. IME NHS physios are so overworked their focus is to get you functional not back to sports.

Thanks for the advice on the private Physio - I can afford it and I have asked a local Physio friend for recommendations - he works with chronic conditions so not really his area.

I had a private physio appointment on Monday and I am now working through a program of exercises - he said I was in a good position to make a full recovery.

I asked and I shouldn't be doing any jumping right now so I won't be copying Anna Veith for the time being - I guess pro athletes are made of stronger stuff than us mere mortals

Thanks for the encouragement to go private - really seems worth it

@Henwc, Off crutches is a great feeling, Thats good to hear, do what the physio says and don't rush it.

@holidayloverxx, Completely agree about NHS physio, my recent review simply ended with the words "so the leg classes worked then, tick in the box, make an appointment for 2 months time, try and go to your private gym for an extra day a week". What about my knee pain? answer - 'I have a meeting in a few minutes and really need to go now!

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Thanks - I'm 12 weeks post operation on Monday which is next physio appointment. Apparently I can ago for it a bit more after 12 weeks, recovery seems good, leg raise is pretty much 100% and pain is nearly zero, hamstring and calf are pretty close to normal but quad still needs some work to rebuild and stretch to get the final bit of knee bend back.

 You know it makes sense.
