Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Some good reports from Raise and weardale this week.

Indeed it’s been a notable week for UK snowsports because for the first time in (how long ?) Everyone of the 10 uk real snow ski areas have been operational at least once Cool

Yad moss weardale and Allenheads ran on Sunday. Big drifts right along the tow line were pisted out at Yad moss. Snow hard packed but ok. Only really one run skiable however we should get a bit more tomorrow and don’t need much. Hopefully open again later in the week.

Took a walk up to one of Several ‘ghost’ ski tows in the Pennines. This one was the former Teesdale ski club tow located near the Langdon Beck hotel. The tow is marked on the old 1:25,000 map. It was about 350m long with a wire rope Skullie the summit is at about 600m.

Must have been a nice little bowl to ski in. Now just some sad remains haunted by the skiers of yesteryear. Sad

Finally getting some snow that isn't accompanied by a westerly gale. Laughing

Southerly is good at Yad Moss. Across the fences. More tomorrow, again with a southerly gale force wind and then a rise just above freezing.

Good possibilities for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Getting a bit mild after Sunday lunch time.

Just had a lovely ski around the gallops above our town.

Lovely refrozen snow perfect for making progress on cross country skis. Clear night sky and inky blackness towards the Dales. lights all the way down the vale of Mowbray and over towards Teesside. Hope none of the neighbours spotted me schussing down our street and back into the garage. Madeye-Smiley

Meanwhile up at Yad Moss tonight......

Big drifts at Yad Moss

Plenty at Weardale by the look of it.

Yad Moss and Raise will run tomorrow. We may need to do some digging at YM , unless the piste basher driver puts in another night shift !

Hope to run Saturday too.

Nice day at the Moss today. Only the main run complete but it is good. Powder gulley is mostly complete but it’s a bit of a grassy walk to get there. A bit more snow falling overnight. The tow will run tomorrow.

Over at Raise they were digging out today but did ski I think by afternoon.

A lovely afternoon at Yad Moss. Only the main run is complete but it is excellent and has been well pisted.
If we get a decent easterly prospects could be very good.

Raise however is in another league. Deep wide cover across savages and presidents. A trench for the tow is now having to be dug out every time it snows. Should come through the mild spell relatively intact. Then cold again. The season is going well.

^^^^Raise Cam from this am shows someone putting skins on at the foot of the tow. Good effort! Very Happy

Mrs MA and I are off work next Mon and Tues Smile and the choices would seem to be:

- Clatter about on re-frozen snow at Yad Moss and/or Raise (70 - 90 mins drive).
- Clatter about on re-frozen snow in Scotland (4.5 - 5 hrs drive).

Skins will be in use, as required, depending on whether lifts are running. Given the potential boiler plate conditions, we may go for the more local bird in hand.

Hmmm.... Puzzled

MA we aim to run the tow at Yad Moss on Sunday and will groom the main (only at the moment) run.

The new snow arrives from the east on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday........ snowHead

Minus 10 being modelled for the summit after Wednesday. Air should also be very dry. Not sure how clean it will be after it’s long journey across Europe from Siberia?

Beautiful sunny day but wow it was cold. Had to do some digging first to move snow onto the tow track.

Mountain Addict turned up after we’d finished the digging.
Mrs MA is a very elegant skier. Mountain Addict is rubbish wink Laughing

^^^An amazing effort from the digging team to get the tow track useable and the bottom of the run skiable. Hats off to them - talk about silk purse from a sow's ear! (Though sow's ear from a sow's ear might best describe PeterS's telemark efforts... Laughing). Must say, even Mrs MA conceded that it was the first time in a while she'd been described as elegant Laughing - cheers Peter!

Stayed overnight at The Lakes last night for a spot of hiking/skinning up Raise today. Don't know if the tow will be on as (despite photos on the website of recent operations - like yesterday!) the last website update refers to 18th Feb... rolling eyes Still, there's plenty of snow by the looks of it and the forecast is decent.

Depending on the weather and impending snow fall, we may then stay near Barnard Castle tonight and go back to Yad Moss tomorrow and skin up.

Pics hopefully to follow in the next few days once I'm back from the Pennines and Lakes mini break.

Saturday would ideally be the first day we might run but the 60 mph easterly winds tomorrow and Friday may well blow most of the new powder snow off the slope and onto the road. Sad

We'll have a better idea by tomorrow night.

@Peter S, and others -
Whilst I remember, they're planning to close Alston bridge on 5th March for 2 weeks, so no easy access to YM or over to Allenheads/Weardale via A689 (Carlisle to Alston) or A686 (Hartside, from M6 Penrith to Alston).
Official diversion is via A69 and A686 from Haydon Bridge: heck of a trek round. Back lanes might be possible, but not advisable if wintery conditions.
