Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@yorkshirelad, have they said August is a realistic target or is that what you are pushing for? How many months after your accident will that be then?

Physio feels that its not out of the question, but i need to work on the muscles. Now walking a mile a day without crutches and on excersize bike for 40 minutes, 10 minutes out of the saddle, squats not a problem either. When i broke my TP i was skiing again by late September from a march accident, so im well ahead of that, now coming upto 16 weeks post op. So it will be 8 months post op for ski indoors at a very easy pace.

@yorkshirelad, hood to hear squats are ok. I wondered whether the extended layoff exercise would affect your knee

The knee is actually better than before.... just aches after a longish walk.. but as the physio says thats down to the muscles not yet strong enough to fully support smooth movement in the joint... but im now seeing improvement daily..

saw the x-rays yesterday and the slither of shin bone still shows little or no sign of calcification near the tip.. doctor not too concerned at the moment due to the fact that there were so many breaks, he still sees no problem in me skiing next year though Little Angel Little Angel Little Angel Little Angel Little Angel Little Angel Little Angel

I'm not sure if Brian Simpson is a name familiar to snowheads or the ski industry. Brian is know as the Bone Welder to the motor cycle racing world - he uses some well known and documented practices to stimulate the body to repair bones much faster. He is based in Ipswich (https://www.physioclinic.net/) I know a few people that have seen him and the results have been amazing. @yorkshirelad, if you don't get that calcification thing going soon it maybe worth calling Brian for a chat.

Please keep us updated - in the right circumstances his treatments can be amazing. It will be interesting to hear his reply. A month before going Heli skiing in AK last march my mate crashed his horse, busting 3 ribs and his collar bone - he went straight to Brian and the injuries healed with sufficient strength in 3 weeks. If I recall correctly Brian explained that his treatments kind of turbo charge the calcification process.

@yorkshirelad, great news overall though that you've made the progress you have, great news. I'm now nearly 6.5 months post op and have got back on the tennis court, albeit short tennis for now but it's confidence building and good rehab. My walking is better but not quite perfect. Able to do lengthy sessions in the gym now on bike, cross train and treadmill with little issues however I'm finding my ankle does swell still when I'm on my feet for long periods in work shoes. Can walk fast on treadmill but still yet to jog or run. Waiting for go ahead fm physio for that. Sounds like you are well on track for your August skiing, fingers crossed.

Been to see the doc today, so its 6 months since the bone was shattered, so now got the all clear to play doubles tennis as long as i dont over do it, the shin bone still not fully knitted and calcified so not encouraged to run or do heavy impact sport, so its cycling, walking and light tennis., skiing still on, but might have to delay my comeback at Manchester till late September now.

Gutted today..... 8 months on and we all thought my leg was recovering well.... back playing light tennis, golf and serious cyclng, the x rays showed great improvement, but a small section was not knitting....so after a CT scan on wednesday it turns out many of the bones have not knitted at all !!!! appears that the bracket has been taking the brunt of the support, so no skiing for a long time... seeing another consultant in two weeks but its doubtfull anything can be done as im " functioning" well.... trouble is the leg felt really good, ... so looks like im doing some walking in the alps instead....

whats annoying is that the fib has healed amazingly well !!! even though the alignment was miles out !! we'll see what the consultant says in two weeks, it might be a bone graft..
canceled one ski trip (it was the incentive to get fit !!) and the other ski holiday is now a walking one in Champoluc... i can't go a season without at least going to alps.... could even try snowboarding !!!!!

@yorkshirelad, if you're going to try snowboarding, you will probably be falling over a lot! Is that wise with a poorly-healed fracture?

@yorkshirelad, such a shame. If the leg felt so good still how did they know that the bone hadn't knitted? Were you still getting routine X Ray's? My consultant discharged me after 6 months but my break wasn't as displaced as yours. It will be gutting to miss season yes but you'll be stronger for next I'm sure!

@yorkshirelad, have you ever heard back from that chap Brian Simpson (the "turbo bone knitter") from Ipswich? I understand that you wrote to him.
Can he do anything to speed up your bone calcification?
I hope he can.

You may remember that I also had a compound open fracture of my ankle (both tib & fib). 10 days ago I had a surgery to remove the scaffolding. A plate and 7 pins were removed in the process, so my tib/fib look somewhat like swiss cheese at the moment... It'll be 6 weeks (hopefully) before the bones have filled out again.

Then there will just remain the small matter of sorting out my ACL/MCL respective tears... and I'll be as good as new! Sad

So we have it tough at the moment but, hey - we'll be back! snowHead
No surrender!
This year has really been horrible for me though... Shocked

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Had xrays every 8 weeks, trouble was the bracket obscured a lot, plus each week my leg became more functioning and little sign of a limp... if you look on my youtube film on the shin there was a large displaced shard, this was knitting from the top but was showing slow signs of knitting near the tip lower down, but the fib was doing great. consultant wanted to know what was is the area near the tip of the shard as the xray kept showing black in that area, but it appeared to be filling in above, so he asked for a CT scan, in the hope that the black area was filled with tissue waiting to calcify..thats when it all went tits up... we new it was a bad break but it should have nitted by now,
Brian Simpson never got back to me, might be worth ringing again but i will wait until ive seen chap in leeds to ascertain why the bones have not knitted etc. Although my consultant does not think theres much that anyone will do bearing in mind im functioning fairly normally...doubles tennis...golf..cycling ..walking. ...light jogging on treadmill.

As to snowboard lesson, i have one day on my own in which to entertain myself in champoluc ...so i would have thought a two hour lesson will be mostly spent on my back bottom on a nursey slope, not as much chance of twisting action on my leg as both legs are in tandem, but then again you never know, its just a thought...

@yorkshirelad, Sorry to read of your setback. Just a heads up on snowboarding. The risk is when you have only one foot strapped in when you are scooting around or getting off a chairlift. A fall then leaves a long lever arm strapped to one foot with no quick release binding.
Best wishes for things to start knitting together soon.

Good news of sort, regional specialist says CT scans not always that good, hes actually pleased with the bone repair even after a poor op in italy, so i can carry on paying tennis but says not to ski for a year to give it time for bones to really knit as with it being a spiral fracture it will take longer as theres a few more pieces to knit rather than one or two bits.. so feel better, still ...id love to mess around on a snow board for an hour or so lol

Well I've spent 5 days so far walking and drinking in champoluc...1 day to go.. best ski conditions in a generation and I'm a spectator...its been torture watching people ski powder etc. A few months ago i over do training and rehab and ended up with shin splints... oh hum ...so walking has been hard work..
Latest plan now is to ski in solden in November for a long weekend... lots of runs down the glacier.. you never know I might make it. .. not getting excited yet as more x rays due in August to check progress..

Bone feels solid and muscles are well on their way to being back to normal...but tendons etc. Inflame when I run.. cycling is no problem and can't do enough..
Never get any swelling so that's a plus.
Long walks help but again I suffer a bit next day.. have been told this for a with time.. yeah right !!
Go for x rays next week in the hope of specialist giving me clearance to start indoor gentle skiing..

Desperate now to book half a dozen ski holidays for next season
