Hi All.
I prefer to take my boots in cabin baggage but a boot bag is too wide for airlines strict 25cm.
So I've been on the lookout for a suitcase that is carry-on but can fit boots (it must be light for KLM's 12kg weight limit) and can also be used on a trip out of season without getting weird looks.
It had to be available in retail.
So I took my boots into a major store and looked for some. Delsy Eastpac etc but they were not long enough for my Dalbello Krypton mondo 28 boots.
Then I found the Samsonite Spark 55cmx 40cmx 20cm (the expandable one to 25cm). You need the 55cm one to fit the boots top to tail.
This is the one....
http://www.johnlewis.com/samsonite-spark-2-wheel-55cm-expandable-cabin-suitcase/p1127459?colour=Blue
With boots it is 8.35kg so room for some extras in case they loose my main ski bag.
I'm sure many of you are thinking one of two things. 1) the cyclops has lost it or 2) thats good to know.
Hope to be of help.
Cheers
Bob

My boots fit OK into a 22 inch wheelie though lugs tend to distort shape slightly.

22" is 55cm. 50cm (20") is not enough.
The extra inches make all the difference.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Having just recently invested in a pair of custom Dale Boot boots I'll be taking them as hand luggage this year and bought this....

I wanted a soft bag to make it easier to store in euro chalet box-sized rooms and it is a bit lighter without the wheels.

If you can find a version of the Salomon GoTo Gear bag from a couple of seasons ago I think it's the perfect bag for carrying boots and some other stuff as hand luggage, as well as up the hill if you prefer to upload in regular footwear. Provided you don't stuff the bag too full it fits inside the measuring cages that airlines use to check hand luggage size.
The boots top and tail in their own waterproof compartments, and sit close to your back so the weight isn't an issue. There are two additional compartments for storing stuff, plus two pockets for other stuff (one soft-lined goggles pocket, and another for wallets, kets, etc). Best designed pack I've ever used, in terms of carrying kit around. I find it much better than hand luggage which is designed to be wheeled around as it keeps my hands free for carrying holdall and ski bag.
One word of caution, the current GoTo Gear bag is a slightly different shape, so might need double checking to see if it fits hand luggage sizes

@awachsmann, The dakine has dimensions 48 x 36 x 33cm. Not cabin size.
@spyderjon, I need it deeper than the EVOC to load some extras into it. but the Lowe alpine one looks good as well. I just needed one that looked more business like.

I have an older version of the Dakine boot rucksack and really like it, it's much easier to carry about than traditional boot bags. I know it's not strictly the sizes specified for cabin baggage but I've flown loads with it and never had a problem, I do realise I will now get stopped and forced to stuff it into one of those luggage things the next time I fly.

This sportube one says "The Sportube® Overheader™ padded gear and boot backpack is a perfect carry-on boot bag. At 48 liters, the Overheader™ meets airline carry-on requirements and is large enough to carry your boots, helmet, clothing and gear needed for a day on the mountain."
Looks a bit big to me but if they say it's ok.....

@swishtony, looks a good bag, but it is only the right size without your helmet - the helmet carrier part is not technically part of the pack

No. 2! I too have been thinking about boot-transport luggage recently, so very useful to see what others do. I currently use an S&R 'square' boot bag because I can get it to hold my boots, avy kit and enough clothes for a long weekend. The lack of wheels/rucksack straps is beginning to annoy me, though, so I'm casting around for alternatives. Note I usually put it in the hold, so the size isn't an issue for me, just the weight.
Like this (but in less horrible colours):
http://www.snowandrock.com/snow+rock-boot-bag/snow-rock-bag/ski-snowboard-outdoor-sports/fcp-product/66213?listing=true
I think airlines are less picky about rucksacks than they are with wheeled cases, so I'm quite interested in the dakine thing.
Do airlines let you fly with boots in the cabin now...? <ducks>
